High jinks in the big country

High above Herefordshire, where the River Wye meanders through an unspoilt valley, Starhill Manor stares lovingly towards Penyard Hill, Chase Hill and the Forest of Dean. This is the big country of the Welsh borders, waiting to be explored by up to 20 family, friends, kids, and up to three dogs.

Roll up past parklands and apple and monkey-puzzle trees and enter a gorgeously renovated world of cosy fabrics and country-modern furnishings. Yes, Starhill Manor is chic, but it’s also playful. Try extracting yourself from the games room with pool table, table football and built-in bar. Pull another cold one from the wine fridge.

Play on – in the two-and-a-half-acre parklands, in the seven-seater, stargazer hot tub and out on the 20-seat terrace with supper from the gas barbecue. Play your own World Cup with the footie goals. Come back inside for the kids’ playroom with toys, play kitchen, dolls’ house and teddies.

In the evening, relax around burning logs with books and Bluetooth. Scroll through Sky on the lounge smart TV and bring your password for Netflix over the fibre broadband. Cook on the four-oven Aga, or order up bistro-quality foodie goodness from our professional chefs, sleep in luxury en-suite bedrooms, mark your calendar for next year.

You’re elevated here, high above Herefordshire, and the garden views across open countryside roll forever, out towards the tops of Penyard Hill, Chase Hill and the Forest of Dean. On site, you’ve two-and-a-half acres of grasslands, apple trees and monkey-puzzle trees to explore.

Renovated into a modern country style, Starhill Manor is a chic and cosy mix of the contemporary and the classic. It’s a seriously grown-up place for family get-togethers, but it’s got a playful side, too. So get the gang together to mix and mingle in a place that knows how to party.

The partying begins in the games room, complete with pool table, table football and board games. Thirsty? Dip into the wine fridge from the built-in bar in the corner. But don’t leave the kids out – we haven’t, with a playroom that’s choc-full of toys, a play kitchen, dolls’ house and teddies.

In the evening, feed the fire with logs as you busy yourself with books from the shelves or music on the Bluetooth. Get together for movie nights on Sky on the lounge smart TV or bring your password to binge Netflix or Amazon Prime Video over the fibre broadband.

Cooking and dining

Foodies will love the four-oven Aga and hot plate, and electric range cooker with ceramic hob and double ovens. Reluctant chefs can stay that way, with a call to our professional chef services, DineIndulge, Côte at Home or Catering by Carrie. Tuck into restaurant-quality fare at home as a one-off or a fully catered break.

You’ll get all 20 of you around the massive dining room table. All the more reason to linger, chat, pass the bread, top up the wine and enjoy great local produce from Powell’s Butchers and Wild by Nature. Stock up the American fridge/freezer and wine fridge with Chester’s Wines finest.

Have a night off and grab great takeaways from Old Stables Fish and Chips in Hereford, Avellino for Italian, Nepalese from Yaks and Yetis, and Asian from Café Zam Zam. Eat out at No. 3 for shoulder of slow-cooked lamb or gourmet burger. Or try fillet of Herefordshire beef at Orles Barn.

Pop abroad (Wales) for real ales, fine food and a warm welcome at the Angel Inn in Abergavenny or for seasonal and local ingredients at The Walnut Tree. Eat the best of British at The Moody Cow with fresh Brixham haddock or vegan blackbean burger. Or try traditional Italian at Avellino.

Children welcome

The motorway gives way to A roads and the excitement builds as Herefordshire’s single-track B roads take you high above Herefordshire and you turn into the gravel drive. Starhill Manor is going to be big, very big. Big enough, in fact, to take 20 guests, so you can bring the whole family along, including three furry friends.

Out there among the monkey-puzzle trees and the orchards, there are two-and-a-half acres of parkland to get to know. Plan a barbecue out on the 20-seat terrace and kick a ball into the footie nets between bites. Big kids can stay out late and stare at the stars in the seven-seater hot tub.

Inside, family time is fun with a games room complete with pool table, table football and board games. Stay refreshed with a mocktail from the built-in bar. Younger kids will love the playroom with toys, play kitchen, dolls’ house and teddies, and everyone will enjoy cosy loglit evenings around the Sky TV or watching Netflix over the fibre broadband.

Cannot recommend highly enough. The house was simply stunning with some amazing features including a hot tub, log fire, our very own bar, the most beautiful dining room and most incredible bedrooms. Decor and finish was superb throughout. And every guest was wowed. The location was also great. We visited Ross on Wye (No31 restaurant) and Symonds Yacht (Ye Olde Ferrie Inn) for lunch on Friday and Saturday respectively and both were excellent. Service before and after was also exemplary - we were greeted in person to run through everything - which was really helpful. Thank you for making my 50th so spectacular. - Jeanette
Thank you to kate & tom's for helping to book a very enjoyable anniversary weekend. Everyone had such fun exploring everything on offer from the hot tub to the games room and the bar, the kids (and big kids) were spoilt for choice. We had everything we could need for a great stay. - Simon
We were an extended family group of fifteen looking to spend some quality time together and we managed to do just that. Starhill is beautifully decorated, very well equipped and had plenty of space for everyone to spend time together inside and out. We thoroughly enjoyed the surrounding area too, it's in such a great location! We hope to stay again in the future, thank you. - Margaret
What an incredible house! The whole party really enjoyed all of the facilities, especially the hot tub and we'd all said how much we would love to return. Thank you to kate & tom's for making this so memorable. - Paige
