Welcome to Sussex Safari, where the Big Five are comfort, space, peace, privacy and good living. Here on the South Downs, the wildlife gets no more fierce than the grazing deer, the song of the nightingale and the flutter of a rare butterfly. But for parties of 26 sleeping in a peppering of private cottages and lodges, it’s a haven of bountiful bliss.
You’ll love the private outdoor living spaces with their sprawling sofas and barbecues. Bubble in the hot tubs, gather around the outdoor fireplace, pop round for coffee to the neighbouring lodges, revel in the privacy. Sussex Safari offers family, friends and pooches the chance to be happily together, yet cosily apart.
Discover gorgeous interiors, handmade furniture, beautiful bathrooms, modern kitchens and fast Wi-Fi… or not. (Maybe you’ll choose to detox from the modern world in a glamping wagon.) At night, everyone can get together in Lucky’s Stable for Japanese street food or wood-fired pizza from the campsite across the road. That’s my kind of safari.
Make magical memories of stunning sunsets observed from four bubbling hot tubs. In private pastureland on the South Downs, this is the simplicity of bijou living, lived by open fires, with a marshmallow toasting over the firepit and the night sky glittering above.
Each property here comes with its own garden and decked terrace. Silhouette’s Stable and Meadow Hide are small but perfectly formed, Fern Lodge offers enough space for a kickaround, while Lucky’s Stable offers a family-friendly large outdoor terrace and sprawling lawn of 200 square metres.
Book out the entire site with family and friends and you’ll have all the space and privacy you want, plus the chance to come together when it suits. Pick whichever lodge or wagon matches your personality: from gorgeous glamping in a romantic wagon to luxury living in modern lodges.
For lovers of creature comforts, Lucky’s Stable, Silhouette’s Stable, Meadow Hide and Fern Lodge, with its balcony perfect for late-night, throw-warmed chatter, offer sumptuous interiors complete with handmade furniture and homely, heart-warming logburners.
Sing along with the Bluetooth, spend your evenings around Netflix on the smart TVs and load pictures to Instagram over the fast Wi-Fi. Or try an off-grid detox in the Wi-Fi-free, balconied Gypsy Wagon complete with William Morris-adorned walls. Come together in spacious Lucky’s Stable.
You’re surrounded by meadow, wildflowers and long grasses, but there’s no sense of getting back to basics in these ultra-modern, fully equipped kitchens with fan-assisted electric ovens (and range cooker in Lucky’s Stable). Get together at Lucky’s Stable for a big meal to seat 16 inside or 20 outside with barbie cuts from Adsdean’s Butchers.
Cross the road to Concierge Camping for their occasional Japanese street food or wood-fired pizza nights. Stock up on goodies from Westbourne Bakery. Wash it all down with award-winning English sparkling wine from Ashling Park. Taking it easy? Call up Georgie (vegan specialist) or Edith, our chefs, for a one-off or fully catered break.
Pop out to The Crate Café for fantastic breakfast wraps and coffee. Tackle takeaways from So India at Bosham, Turkish at Reina, or Thai at Lemongrass. Take a 25-minute walk to The Horse and Groom in East Ashling for fantastic food and a gorgeous pub garden, or The Richmond Arms for great gastro and Sunday roast.
Large groups will find plenty of space in The Fox and Hounds at Funtington, plus a great atmosphere and plenty of crispy oriental beef or the pie of the day. Or discover fine restaurants at The Crab and Lobster in Sidlesham, Fox Goes Free in Charlton and The Millstream Restaurant in Bosham.
