Sensational Salcombe

Once home to the Earl of Devon (and anonymous smugglers before him), The Moult is a heady mix of history and romance. The Moult exhausts comparisons, even superlatives. Described by one enchanted visitor to Salcombe as arguably the finest private house on the South Coast of England. Live the dream at Salcombe's iconic pink house.

Designed to unwind

Welcome to your seaside home. Relax. Your holiday has begun. Look around. Victorian gothic grandeur brought to life by cool, understated décor and art.

Play the baby grand piano in a sitting room looking out to spectacular views over the swimming pool, the exotic gardens and the estuary beyond. Or let the state-of-the-art Sonos audio system play the beat.

Feel free to unleash your inner Heston Blumenthal in your choice of Bulthaup kitchen; or play the arm chair movie critic in the home cinema in a house that is its own TV star.

Take the plunge in the glistening waters of the 22 metre heated outdoor pool. Let the water jets do their job, or soak up the sun lounging on the terrace. Fancy an Autumn or Winter break? When dark falls on the estuary, sip a late nightcap by a roaring log fire.

Swimming Pool

The swimming pool is 22 metres long, heated and surrounded by stone flags. And, close by, a gas barbecue and huge Kadai Indian fire bowl promise outdoor gourmandise and, in the evening, an opportunity of watching a sight of rare enchantment: the moon glistening over the Salcombe estuary.

The swimming pool is open and heated all year round.

Gardens and Grounds

Acres of serpentine Victorian garden terraces overflow with the fronds of palms, aloes, agaves and exotic flora collected from all over the world, offering fresh vistas, surprise sun traps and birdsong at every step.

Still feeling energetic? The Moult has indoor and outdoor table tennis tables. There’s croquet and table football. And if you want to sail, design sand castles or saunter across the sands, private steps take you down to the beach.

As you stroll down the shaded private path to South Sands Beach you’ll pass by the walled vegetable garden, which displays home growing at it’s finest, you can even have a seasonal box put together by the gardener.

The South West Coast path is on your door step. There’s an excellent supply of buckets and spades and crabbing nets for younger explorers who prefer messing around in sand and rock pools.

End the day saluting the passing craft from the Belvedere, or sipping a well earned sundowner. Tough work but it would be rude not to.

Cooking and Dining

Make your choice.

Rustle up a gourmet dinner – you have your choice of the two ultra-modern, hi-tech Bulthaup kitchens, each with its own spectacular view. If you fancy a salad, ask the gardener if he’ll pick you some hyper-fresh lettuce from the walled garden.

An elegant dining room seating 24 special guests spills onto a broad garden terrace tailored for celebrating that special birthday or anniversary.

Al fresco? You’re spoiled for choice: the main kitchen doors open onto the terrace above the sparkling pool. Picnic in the garden. Eat in the summer house. Or enjoy a grill-fest under the stars with the Indian kadai burner on the castellated Belvedere or the gas barbecue on the terrace.

Totally don’t want to cook? Leave it to Claire’s Kitchen, Wild Artichokes, Galley Girls, Seahorse Private Event Catering or Dartmouth Fine Food’s chef Serin Aubrey who’ll deliver chef-prepared meals to the door or prepare a banquet for you at The Moult. And you won’t even have to wash up.

Fancy dining out? You have your choice again: walk to the Winking Prawn, or South Sands Beachside Restaurant, or make your way to Salcombe for the Crab Shed, The Ferry Inn, The Jetty, Sailor V, or enjoy the live music at the Island Street Bar and Grill, offering food at different gastro-levels within a short distance.

Or travel to The Beachhouse at South Milton beach, The Millbrook Inn at South Pool, The Cricket Inn at Beesands or the renowned Seahorse in Dartmouth.

Fall asleep to the moon glistening over the Salcombe estuary.
The Moult sleeps 24 very comfortably.

Twelve stylish bedrooms and even more bathrooms.

There are 11 luxurious bedrooms with ensuite or private bathrooms. One further bedroom has access to a shared family bathroom. The beds are big, the views bigger. Among the bedrooms are one twin and two bedrooms which can either be twins or super king-size beds. Each bedroom is unique, each bathroom special.

The cotton count is high. Every mattress is either handmade or bought at the Conran Shop. And bathroom towels come from Designer’s Guild and The White Company.

So, after a long day of adventure, you’ll nod off to the laid-back combination of cool breeze, softly lapping waves and hooting owls. You’ll wake gently to cooing doves (whom you can choose to ignore). And, in between, you should be sleeping like a baby.
