Be stirred not shaken

Formerly a boutique Regency hotel, Chester Place was voted Trip Advisor’s Best Small Hotel in the World. And now it’s even better – because you choose your own guests. Get the generations together, stock the fridge with drinks and prepare for a box seat on top of Chester’s Roman walls with a sparkling view down the River Dee.

As a hotel, Chester Place left former 007 Sir Roger Moore stirred not shaken, while hotel guide Alastair Sawday declared it ‘Chester’s equivalent of the Royal Box’. It’s true. It’s a fine spot out on the lawn among the cherry blossom with the river cruisers gliding by. But it’s on the inside where you and 15 friends and family will be tickled pinkest.

From the seven luxury en-suite bedrooms to the freestanding copper bath, interiors here are lush and plush. You’ve toys aplenty, as well. There’s a night at the movies on offer in the cinema room, with its giant TV screen and U-shaped sofas. Pick from Sky and BT Sport or hook up to your Netflix account on the BT Wi-Fi. Just add popcorn.

Entertain in the open-plan kitchen, eat around the 16-seat dining table in front of the 80” TV, watch hours vanish over air hockey, table football and darts in the games room. Set your soundtrack on the jukebox. Live Chester’s café culture, shop the Rows, cheer yourself hoarse at the races, then come home to world-leading design and comfort.

Gardens and grounds

Gardens and grounds here are all about the river-view patio area, a spot that inspired hotel guru Alastair Sawday to describe Chester Place as ‘Chester’s equivalent of the Royal Box’.

Perched on top of the city’s Roman walls, high above the river cruisers on the Dee, amid the fluttering cherry blossom, you’ve got lawns and terraces from which to take it all in. Can you think of a better place for a barbie? Neither can we. You’ll find the gas barbecue out on the terrace.

There are places here among the immaculate fabrics and tasteful colours to congregate and places to break away and contemplate. Start your congregation in the open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, perfect for entertaining. Or bag a book from the library shelves and immerse yourself in some magical me-time.

Don’t forget your Amazon or Netflix passwords. You’ll need them for the cinema room with its 80”-plus screen and U-shaped sofas. Popcorn and prosecco at the ready. Wi-Fi comes care of BT. Or get fired up in the games room over air hockey, table football and darts. Spin some discs on the jukebox.

Cooking and dining

Fancy an in-house tasting menu or cheeky cocktail canapé? Call up our chefs to enjoy the best of British, Spanish and Italian cuisine. Or wade in yourself and excel in the delicious contemporary kitchen on the two electric ovens and pack the fridge-freezers full of cakes, cheese, bread and meat from local artisan bakeries.

Eat around the 16-seater dining table or come in summer to sit out, high above the Dee, on the river-view patio, once described by renowned travel writer Alistair Sawday as ‘Chester’s equivalent of the Royal Box’. Spark up the gas barbie and relax with a beer above the bustle of the Old Dee Bridge with the river washing over the tidal weir.

Just along the canal, The Albion Inn has a lengthy list of Good Pub Guide reviews and awards, alternatively sit out on the rolling green lawns overlooking the racecourse at The Architect, an elegant Georgian building serving modern British. For properly posh nosh, consider Hypha, awarded a Green Michelin star just six months after opening.

Other celebrated eateries around Chester include Porta, inspired by the tapas bars of Barcelona and Madrid, or Covino, a light and airy restaurant serving delicious small plates. Da Noi is perfect for authentic Italian, while the Opera Grill uses charcoal grills and woodburning ovens to great effect. Watch out for the gospel choir on Sundays.

Children welcome

You’ve all the space in the world here for mums, dads, cousins, grannies and grandads. So children will feel right at home. Especially if your home sits atop Chester’s Roman walls with a grandstand view down the River Dee – a view that prompted one prominent travel writer to declare this ‘Chester’s equivalent of the Royal Box’.

Kids will love that outside space, perched high above the river, watching the comings and goings on the wall, the river cruisers and the bridge over the Dee. Stay out there for barbies on the terrace and handstands on the lawn. As darkness drops, head back inside for toys and trinkets.

Destination number one will likely be the cinema room, with its 80”-plus TV, equipped with BT Sport and Sky and offering Netflix and Amazon Prime through your own login on the BT Wi-Fi.
Keep the entertainment coming in the games room with air hockey, table football and darts. Sleep in your own en-suite room or with mum and dad in the Copper Suite, with its own sofa-bed lounge.
